Buck to run against Titus in Las Vegas congressional race

Nevadans overwhelmingly backed the incumbent and favored Republican challenger in Tuesday’s primary election for the state’s 1st Congressional District.

Longtime incumbent Dina Titus ran ahead to an early lead against a range of Democratic challengers Tuesday evening, with Republican Carrie Ann Buck, a state senator, strolling to an equally early and decisive primary win.

The 1st Congressional District contains parts of the Las Vegas area, including the Las Vegas Strip, the nearby city of Henderson and rural areas of Clark County.

Titus, U.S. representative for the district, was projected to win Tuesday evening with 79.08% of votes, over 24,000 as of 10 p.m. Pacific time Tuesday, far surpassing her three Democratic challengers.

Buck was projected to have won the Republican ticket with 78.16% of votes, over 16,000 as of Tuesday evening, beating four challengers.

Titus is seeking to win her eighth term in the district. She first won the seat in 2013 after representing the 3rd Congressional District from 2009-2011, which included several of the same areas as today’s 1st Congressional District.

Before joining Congress, Titus was a state senator for two decades.

Buck previously positioned herself as the candidate unseat Titus, having pulled off the feat of outraising the Democratic incumbent in campaign contributions during the lead-up to the primary election.

“As a state senator, I flipped a blue seat – and the momentum is real,” Buck told Maggie’s List, a national conservative women’s political action committee, in April. “Just last quarter, we outraised my Democrat opponent.”

Both candidates had issued statements in the immediate aftermath of the projected election results.

“I wish to thank the people of Southern Nevada for reaffirming their support for me,” read a statement by Titus posted to her X account. “As I have stood up for them over the last decade, today they stood up for me and our collective values and commitment to build better lives for the people of Congressional District 1.”

Buck re-posted a series of congratulatory messages on her X social media account, responding to a media outlet’s post calling the election in her favor. “Thank you so much to the voters of Nevada’s First Congressional District! It is an honor to be your Republican Nominee and I look forward to serving you in Congress.”
