Crete-Monee’s Eight-Run Seventh Inning Sinks Kankakee Baseball 9-2
For six innings on Tuesday afternoon, the Kankakee varsity baseball team engaged Crete-Monee in a tense, tightly contested conference battle. However, a massive eight-run surge by the visitors in the top of the seventh inning shattered a 1-1 tie, ultimately handing the hosts a 9-2 defeat.
Kankakee starting pitcher Jacob Vinardi turned in a stellar performance to keep his team squarely in the game. The senior right-hander navigated the Crete-Monee lineup effectively over six innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking only one batter.
Crete-Monee broke the ice in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead, but Vinardi and the Kankakee defense kept the deficit at a single run. The hosts finally answered in the bottom of the fifth. Utilizing timely at-bats and situational execution, Kankakee pushed the tying run across the plate to make it a 1-1 game heading into the late innings.
The pivotal seventh inning proved to be Kankakee’s undoing. Crete-Monee’s bats suddenly came alive, putting immense pressure on the Kankakee pitching staff and defense. The visitors batted around the order, combining a flurry of hits with a few costly Kankakee defensive miscues to plate eight runs and establish a commanding 9-1 advantage.
Despite the sudden deficit, the Kankakee lineup continued to battle in the bottom of the seventh, scratching across one final run before Crete-Monee secured the final outs to close the book on the afternoon.
Freshman Johnny Short was a bright spot for the Kankakee offense, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Junior J. Villafuerte also delivered a solid multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Senior Mike Prudejr collected a hit and crossed the plate once, while freshman Rahman Lawal displayed excellent plate discipline by drawing a pair of walks.
While Kankakee managed seven hits as a team and kept the game close early, three fielding errors and the late-inning pitching struggles ultimately proved too much to overcome against the opportunistic Crete-Monee lineup.
