JOLIET, Ill. — Three inmates are facing new criminal charges following a violent altercation at the Will County Adult Detention Facility that began when a prisoner was assaulted with a drink pitcher.

On Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, shortly after 2:30 p.m., a fight broke out in the facility involving six inmates. According to officials, the disturbance escalated after one individual was struck in the head with the pitcher.

The facility’s Emergency Response Team was deployed to the scene to restore order and successfully detained the six inmates involved in the melee.

Following an investigation into the incident, authorities filed charges of Mob Action and Battery against three of the inmates: Giovanni Simpson, Aaron Ortiz, and Francisco Medina.

Officials stated that the defendants are scheduled to appear in court later this month. Charges are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
