The Beecher Fire Protection District battled a heavy fire in a detached garage on Saturday, January 17, overcoming freezing conditions that hindered initial suppression efforts.

Crews were dispatched to 515 Oak Park Avenue at approximately 6:40 p.m. According to Fire Chief Joseph Falaschetti, first-arriving units reached the scene within five minutes to find the garage heavily involved in flames, presenting multiple exposure hazards to nearby structures.

A “Full Still Alarm” was requested to ensure adequate personnel and equipment were available. While homeowners and neighbors confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the garage and surrounding buildings, firefighters faced a significant challenge due to the winter weather. Crews encountered a frozen fire hydrant, which temporarily delayed the establishment of a sustained water supply.

Despite the delay and freezing temperatures, crews deployed multiple handlines to protect adjacent structures and suppress the flames. The fire was brought under control within approximately 40 minutes.

No civilian injuries were reported. Damage estimates were not immediately available, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the district’s investigators.

A massive mutual aid response assisted at the scene and provided station coverage. Assisting agencies included fire departments and districts from Manhattan, Crete Township, Crete, Grant Park, Monee, University Park, Cedar Lake, Steger, South Chicago Heights, Frankfort, Dyer, and St. John. The Beecher Police Department, Emergency Management Agency, and Public Works Department also assisted.
