Monee Public Works Handles Water Leaks and Winter Prep
Village of Monee Board Meeting | November 19, 2025
Article Summary: The Monee Public Works Department has been busy addressing multiple water main breaks while transitioning to winter operations. Crews repaired three significant leaks in late October and early November and have prepared the village’s fleet for snow removal.
Public Works Update Key Points:
-
Water Main Breaks: Crews repaired leaks on Whiting Way (corroded bolts), Roosevelt Street (hole in a tee), and Colonial Drive (failed cross fitting).
-
Winter Readiness: All plow trucks have been equipped with plows and have already responded to the season’s first snowfall on November 9.
-
Tree Planting: The department planted 25 new trees across the village to replace dead or missing ones in parkways.
The Monee Village Board on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, heard a report on the recent heavy workload faced by the Department of Public Works.
Trustee Doug Horne, reporting for the department, detailed three major water leaks that crews repaired in rapid succession. On October 30, a mainline valve on Whiting Way failed due to corroded bolts, requiring a seven-hour repair. The same day, a leak near a fire hydrant on Roosevelt Street took nine hours to fix. A third leak on Colonial Drive on November 4 required 15 hours of work to replace a cross fitting.
“When it rains, it pours,” Horne remarked about the cluster of infrastructure issues.
Despite these emergencies, the department has shifted gears for the season. Horne confirmed that all trucks are now equipped with plows, a readiness tested by a 4-inch snowfall on November 9. Additionally, the department completed its fall tree planting program, adding 25 new trees to village parkways.
